Before embarking on the adventure of touring Mallorca in a camper van, there are a few key things you should know about the island, such as the fact that there are no campsites as such. It's curious, isn't it? This has happened because of the hotel pressure they have suffered over the last few years, and they have had no choice but to close.
But don't worry! There are many cool places where you can spend the night and wake up watching the sea -without a doubt one of life's great pleasures-. Whether you're an expert or a novice camper, we'll tell you everything you need to know in this guide.
Apps for touring Mallorca in a camper van
First of all, we recommend the apps that will save your life on more than one occasion (we say this from experience):
- Park4NightEssential. This app shows you all the rest areas, waste disposal points and water points on a map. The best thing is that it has updated reviews from other users, which will let you know the state of the site (if it's very crowded, or quiet, or dirty) in real-time. It has a free version and a paid version that costs €1.99/month, which for us is worth paying for.
- Clean Wave: An app that allows you to see where the corners are located to refill your tank with clean water.
- Maps.meIt's like Google Maps but offline. It works by satellite, and we recommend it because in some parts of the island you won't be able to get internet. You can also download the maps and mark points of interest.
- Petrol stations SpainPetrol and diesel prices in real time. There are many petrol stations on the island so you will have no problem finding one.
- OtherWe also recommend TripAdvisor to look for cafés or restaurants; Wikiloc if you are a hiking lover and want walking routes; and Campercontact, very similar to Park4Night..
Where to stay overnight in Mallorca
First of all, we want to emphasise the difference between stay overnight y camping. While the former is permitted throughout the island, the latter is not. “Pernoctar” is the action of sleeping parked in a spot but without setting your "bits and bobs" outside the camper. Camping, on the other hand, involves the opposite: putting out an awning, taking out chairs and a table, or setting up a line to dry clothes...
However, we recommend that you plan your overnight stops in advance using the app. Park4Night. The trick is to find less crowded areas to have some privacy and avoid potential penalties. In our personal experience, we've never had any problems with the “Guardia Civil” in this regard. And, if you stay overnight in a different spot each time, you also won't have any problem setting out your table and chairs for a few hours at dinner time, as the problem arises when you create a permanent camping setup.

Best places to stay overnight (including sunsets)
1. FORMENTOR LIGHTHOUSE
An unmissable place to visit. You have to drive carefully along the winding road, but the journey is well worth it. During the summer months, it is forbidden to drive private vehicles from 10 am to 7 pm due to the large number of tourists who visit the lighthouse. For this reason, if you want to spend the night somewhere in Cabo de Formentor, you must enter before 7 pm and leave the next day before 10 am - so that the cameras don't take a photo of your number plate and fine you.
We recommend that you park your camper in this area in the middle of Cabo de Formentorbetween Puerto de Pollensa (start of the road) and the lighthouse (Fianl de la Carretera). It is free, without services and very private, which will give you privacy. Of course, you will wake up with the sun rising over the sea, in a spectacular sunrise. At night, the view of Puerto de Pollensa with the lights on is also very beautiful.
2. FAR DES CAP GROS
Situated on a promontory at the western entrance to the port of Sóller, it is the ideal place to spend the night after a visit to the town of Sóller and a sunset on the promenade. With a spectacular view of the entire port, it is a place without services but quiet and private, so that you can sleep once again high above sea level and with a view. At night it is closed, and around the area you will always find several camper mates parked.
3. SA CALETA DE PORTALS VELLS
Coves with crystal clear water, nature and... the odd goat. The area of Portalls Vells is located in the south of the island and has several beaches and coves to enjoy. It is considered one of the 20 most beautiful places in Mallorca. To live the camper experience at 100%, you can spend the night with your camper on the cliffs of Sa Caleta. There is also a restaurant in the lower part of the cove for a good meal the next day.
The best thing is that it hides a secret: just fifteen minutes' walk away, there is a unique primitive sanctuary in a cave - the Cave of the Mother of God - with three porticoes reminiscent of ancient Egypt. Undoubtedly a curious place to visit. It also has two adjoining coves: King's beach (or Portals Vells III) and Magician's beach (or Portals Vells II).
4. SA CALOBRA
Sa Calobra is an impressive set of rocky cliffs located in the north of the island. It is one of the most inaccessible coves on the island (it can only be reached on foot or by boat), but it is undoubtedly worthy of its fame. We recommend you to make your visit by camper van from the day before with this itinerary: The first point to reach is the port of Sa Calobra. The road is a winding serpentine road with several knots, probably the most difficult to drive on the whole of Mallorca, so if you are inexperienced in driving we do not recommend it.
After arriving at the port of Sa Calobra, you will find a free car park where you can spend the night. This is the best option, because it will allow you to get up early and get ahead of all the ferries with tourists arriving to visit the cove. The walk from the port to the cove is very well signposted and takes about 15 minutes under some very interesting caves. All in all, although difficult to access, it is a nice excursion if you are going to spend a long stay on the island.
5. COLL BAIX REFUGE
If you like nature, you must visit this spot. It is a wooded area in the Alcudia area. You can spend the night right in front of the Coll Baix refuge. It is a secret paradise that few people know about. In the refuge there are some paid services that you can request if you are interested. From this point, you can start the walk to Coll Baix beach, one of the most beautiful on the whole island. But be careful, the path can be a little difficult for the elderly or children. When you get there, you will find the place to be a dream come true.
6. AGULLA COVE
Cala Agulla is located on the east coast. It is near the town of Cala Ratjada, which is also worth a visit. It preserves its unspoilt environment, made up of dunes and vegetation. However, it tends to be quite crowded in summer and it also has the typical wooden huts where water sports are offered.
In the car park of Cala Agulla, it is common to see motorhomes and campers staying overnight. There is a large area of land and grass as it used to be a campsite in the past. There is a charge of €12. It is worth it if you want to spend the day at Cala Agulla afterwards. The beach offers public toilets and showers.
Other places of interest in Mallorca
- Punta Blanca: A very quiet place surrounded by nature. Once you get to know it you won't want to leave. From there you can visit the Dragonera islet.
- Mirador Des Delta (Puigderós Urbanization)): There are several pinewoods to spend the night and at a 5 minutes walk the sea and the rock form several natural pools.
- Puig de Santa Magdalena: The most "instagrammable" place. It is a viewpoint from where you can see several points of the island and there is a bench with the phrase "no sunset without a kiss" where you can take some nice pictures.
- Sanctuary of Cura: A very similar site to the previous one, at 550 metres above sea level. Nearby there is a traditional Mallorcan restaurant where you can enjoy typical Mallorcan food.
- Artá Caves car park: An excursion to do something different from "cove tourism". If you feel like visiting the caves, you can sleep in the car park and you will be the first to enter.
- Garden City (Palma): It is a place with little tourist interest, but if you need to be close to the capital, it is only a 45 minute walk along the promenade. You'll also be sure to keep your van safe because it's always in use by other campers.
Where to empty and fill the camper's water in Mallorca
Emptying the waters is perhaps the most complicated part as there are very few officially authorised points, so you will have to plan your route well. We leave them for you here:
- The green point of Palma de Mallorca: It is the only green point on the whole island and is located in the capital, in the industrial estate of Son Castello (We'll leave the address here for you). You can empty the toilet, clean the chemical toilet and refill it again. The best thing: it's free and open every day of the year from 8am to 7.45pm.
- SE7&GO petrol station in Palma: This point is also in the capital. It is one of the cheapest petrol stations on the island. It is only for refilling clean water (free).
- El Menut 2 recreational areaIt is a recreational area with picnic areas and barbecues. There is a public toilet where you can empty your water and a fountain where you can refill with clean water.
- Clean Wave: As we have told you in the section on essential apps, with the Clean Wave App you can find several of these clean water points scattered around the island.
Tips for travelling with your camper in Mallorca
Before concluding this guide, we would like to give you some tips that, although they may seem very obvious, can help you live your experience without complications:
- Keep an eye on the grey water level: It is very likely that after several days of touring the island, you are immersed in its landscapes and have disconnected from the outside world. That's all well and good, that's the goal! But don't forget that a camper van requires certain maintenance tasks (few). One of them is emptying the water. In a week, we recommend that you drain it twice. Otherwise, you run the risk of it overflowing and going down the drain.
- Empty the chemical toilet at the clean point: The toilet uses a blue chemical and it is forbidden to throw it anywhere. It is necessary to go to the green point for cleaning.
- Close the drawers before setting off: This may seem very basic, but it is very common for us to forget to lock our drawers and cupboards before we start driving and to be given a whole concert during the drive.
- Bring the necessary clothing: Although all our campers have storage space, we recommend that you bring only the clothes you need for your holiday. This will make it easier for you to keep things tidy in the camper. Don't worry about the bedding, we'll provide it.
- Kitchen also in the camper: We believe that to live the 100% experience, you have to make use of the camping gas that all our campers come with. Having a delicious dinner and watching the stars is a marvellous experience. The vans also have an extractor fan, so it is very comfortable to use.
